Cleaning service. We have been cleaning, for a lifetime.
But how did we get into the cleaning service business in the first place?
It’s not the kind of thing that most kids inspire to. The janitorial business.
Personally, my educational background was in commercial art and was followed by the military with school and training in aviation electronics.
But, thinking back, there were many experiences that led Patriot USA to this path.
My grandfather and my father were technically minded hard working men. My grandfather was a master welder and my father a bio-technician and a fire chief in the Philadelphia area. In the 1950’s and 1960’s they also ran a cleaning service as a way to supplement incomes. Mostly, they cleaned public schools (and anywhere else that needed it). My dad would tell me of stories going to help pop-pop after school when he was a boy.
When I was 8 years old, I learned how to strip and wax a floor and clean bathrooms to help my dad prepare a banquet hall for our local fire company. We did it several times a year, for many years. Long before my teens, I was capable of controlling a buffer, finessing it around corners and edges. It was fun to me.
I carried this influence with me all my life, no matter what I did, and I always found myself making sure things were clean and smelled good.
By the time I was in my early 20’s and I was in the US Navy, stationed in California with a helicopter squadron and deploying often to the Pacific. I was busy, heavily tasked with troubleshooting and repairing helicopters.
It was the “in between” times, that we were responsible for maintaining the aircraft hangers, maintenance and office spaces that we occupied.
In our squadron it seemed, we were always getting ready for a “big inspection”. Consequently we acclimated to having our hangar squared away at all times. It was a matter of pride, and made things easier when it was necessary to look clean, as opposed to scrambling to make a good appearance. I found myself teaching others not only how to fix helicopters but how to strip the floors and how to operate the scrubber machines that we used.
The running joke was “the wings we wear on our uniform should have a buffer between them”. Between maintaining aircraft, we cleaned… a lot.
In my later 20’s, when I was honorably discharged, I accidentally found my way to the commercial cleaning industry. It was supposed to be temporary till I decided what my next career would be, but I never left.
Here we are, one of the top cleaning service companies in the USA, teaching our people expert cleaning techniques and how to make sure our clients facilities are always looking good.
Luckily, I personally had the opportunity to also bring technical, organizational and artistic background to Patriot USA.
